چکیده

This paper compares the inhibition effects of affect and cognition on the recall of competing members of a category. The results indicate that the affective component of overall attitudes has a greater ability to inhibit the recall of competing members than the cognitive component. From a methodological viewpoint, the recall inhibition effect is proposed as a relatively unbiased way to study affective and cognitive-driven recall effects, without forcing participants into cognitive recall processes.

The Effects of Glossing Conventions on L2 Vocabulary Recognition and Production

To investigate the effects of different glossing conventions on vocabulary recognition and recall, 158 participants were given a pre-test to make sure that they did not have any prior knowledge of the target words. Reading passages with four different glossing conventions (interlinear, marginal, pre-text, and post-text) were given to eight groups. Four groups received interlingual glosses and f...

Study repetition and divided attention: effects of encoding manipulations on collaborative inhibition in group recall.

Two experiments tested the effects of encoding manipulations on group recall and on the magnitude of collaborative inhibition. Collaborative inhibition refers to the phenomenon where by a collaborative group recalls less than do the same number of individuals who work alone and then have their nonredundant responses pooled. Participants studied categorized word lists once or three times (Experi...

O7: The Mechanistic Role of Sleep in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Around 75% of civilians have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives, and this number is considerably higher in many parts of the world, as well as in military veterans and first responders. Of those exposed to trauma, 15-25% will develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  PTSD extracts enormous economic, health, and quality of life cost. Thus, it is critical to underst...

Impaired executive functioning influences verbal memory in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND How executive functioning affects delayed verbal recall in AN has never been tested. We investigated the influence of speed of information processing (SIP) and inhibition on delayed verbal recall in females with AN. METHODS Measures of SIP and inhibition from 35 females with AN were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression after controlling for age, depressive symptomatology...

Why two heads apart are better than two heads together: multiple mechanisms underlie the collaborative inhibition effect in memory.

Although a group of people working together remembers more than any one individual, they recall less than their predicted potential. This finding is known as collaborative inhibition and is generally thought to arise due to retrieval disruption. However, there is growing evidence that is inconsistent with the retrieval disruption account, suggesting that additional mechanisms also contribute to...
